We are at the height of summer which involves many things such as backyard parties and vacations. As well as trips to the beach and soaking in your personal or neighborhood pool While most of you use this time of the year to relax a bit, scammers see summer as a prime season for trying to steal money from people who might have their guard down while shopping, day tripping or taking extended vacations. Are you trying to keep safe this summer? Check out some of the most common summer tech scams you need to watch out for.

1. Job Opportunity Scams. These scams will surface on social media offering high-paying jobs with little or no experience. Most of the ads for these jobs are vague and interviews are conducted via email and text message. The goal of the criminals is to separate the unsuspecting students from their money and personal and financial information. With many jobs being remote these days, you need to warn your teens to do their research to verify that the company they are interviewing with is legit.

2. Ticket Rip-Off Scams. Crooks will post available tickets for concerts, sports events, and festivals on sites such as Craigslist that don't exist and sometimes for actual events. Always purchase tickets for events from a reputable source. Never wire money or send cash for tickets. Watch out for ticket printouts, as criminals will sometimes sell the same printout to multiple individuals.

3. Vacation Rental Scams. When you're looking to book a vacation house, do your research. Criminals will use listings existing listings they find on legitimate sites, passing them off as their own property. After you pay the required deposit, they are gone, and so is your money. It's safer for you to stick with legitimate sites to book vacation homes. Also, if you are asked to leave the original website to pay at a different one, beware.

4. Phishing scams. Phishing has been around a long time and comes in 3 different forms, email, text messaging, and voice. When scammers use phishing, they pose as a trusted source or company that contacts you asking you for personal information directly. No trustworthy company will email, text you, or call you asking for passwords or bank information, and you will always have to log in at a trusted and secure site.

5. Summer Repair Scams. In the event of a severe summer storm in your area, you could see storm chasers and other home repair scammers trying to target you for your cash. These scammers are always ready to give you a great deal. After you make the down payment, they could disappear. Or, if they do the work, it will be of poor quality and done with substandard materials.

I hope you can use these tips to help you stay safe from scams this summer season. If you need further assistance, please reach out to me with any questions you might have. I am always happy to help!
