How To Find The Best Free Streaming Services

Remember when cutting the cord and getting rid of cable was supposed to save you money? Unfortunately, the price of multiple streaming services can quickly add up. With the price of these services skyrocketing, it might be best to re-subscribe to traditional cable TV. Fear not! There is a way to cut the cord for free, with no premium subscriptions. You'd be amazed at what you can stream online for free. Numerous online streaming services are completely free, and many have some content you can watch without paying for a subscription. Here's what you need to know.

How can you get free TV and movies? Believe it or not, it’s easier now than ever to cut the cord for free. Many free streaming services are partnered with larger premium services and networks, so you get a great variety of new and older content. For example, Paramount owns Pluto TV, so much of what you can stream on Paramount, including some CBS shows, are on Pluto TV.

Where can I get free TV and movies? There are quite a few options you can choose from when getting access to free streaming services. Here are a few options:

  • Roku Channel. It includes original content, recent and older shows, movies, and live channels.

  • Pluto TV. Pluto includes on-demand and live channels featuring new and older content. Many CBS shows are available a week after originally airing.

  • Freevee. Includes offers both on-demand and live channels. It has an increasing amount of original content, including some Amazon originals.

  • Tubi. Has the best selection of free movies from Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate, WB, and more. Also includes TV shows, original content, and live channels.

  • Xumo Play. Offers live channels and on-demand content. It’s owned by Charter and Comcast.

  • Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu). While it’s mainly known as a streaming rental service, you can also access a variety of free movies and TV shows. There isn’t as much available here as some other services.

  • Kanopy. This is only available for free via local libraries. So, you’ll need to check if your library participates. Rent (for free) TV shows and movies, including recent releases.

  • Plex. Plex offers free on-demand TV shows and movies, along with live channels.

  • YouTube. YouTube offers numerous free movies. It’s a more limited selection, but worth checking out.

  • Sling Freestream. You don’t need a Sling subscription to access over 500 live channels

Now keep in mind all of these streaming services are supported by ads, but in my experience, the ads are the same as watching traditional TV. I would also highly suggest using free apps to help you search all the services at once for the content you want.

What about watching local content like news, and weather?

The most common complaint I hear about trying to cut the cord is no local content. It’s true, that streaming local stations isn’t always easy, but there are a few options:

  • Use an Over The Air antenna to stream your digital local channels for free

  • Check if your local station or news network has a free app for your TV/streaming box

  • See if your local news/weather network is available on Local Now, Haystack News, Very Local, or Zeam (all offer live channels and some on-demand content)

Hopefully, this will give you tips to help you take advantage of all of the free streaming services available. If you have any questions, please reach out. I'm always available.
